Lavan Legal was formed on 3 April 2006 when the majority of Perth partners of the national firm Phillips Fox recognised a niche in the marketplace for an independent legal practice. Prior to 2006, Lavan had traded under the names Phillips Fox, Lavan Solomon and Lavan & Walsh. Lavan and its predecessor firms have provided legal services in Western Australia since 1898.
