The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) was formed on July 1 2025, following the Western Australian Government's public sector reform initiative.
The 2025 public sector reform initiative saw the department's responsibilities increased with the creation of the Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery.
The Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery was created by amalgamating the Office of Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery, Major Projects from the Department of Finance, the Office of Major Health Infrastructure Delivery from the Department of Health, as well as Westport and METRONET.
Before its current iteration, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure was the Department of Transport, which was formed on July 1 2009, when the former Department for Planning and Infrastructure was split into three new agencies.
DTMI coordinates the State’s transport operations, leads strategic planning and policy development, delivers safe and sustainable transport services and projects and is building Western Australia’s future by leading major infrastructure projects.
It connects people with goods and services through an intricate system of roads, railways, airports, ports and waterways and educates and regulates to keep Western Australians safe within its networks.
With more than 1000 employees, it has the expertise to deliver and connect a complex, inter-related economic and social network.
DTMI is part of the Western Australian Transport Portfolio, along with Main Roads Western Australia and the Public Transport Authority.
