
The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) was created on July 1, 2025, from the previous Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, following the Western Australian Government's public sector reform initiative.
It oversees the regulatory and policy requirements of the resources sector. playing a critical role in building the State’s economy and ensuring mineral and petroleum resources are developed in a sustainable and responsible way.
The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration consists of three groups, including the Geological Survey of Western Australia, Resource Tenure, Resource and Environmental Compliance, and the Aboriginal Empowerment Unit.
