The Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED) was formed on July 1, 2025, following the Western Australian Government's public sector reform initiative.
Before the 2025 reform, the Department of Energy and Economic Development was known as the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, which was formed on July 1, 2017, as part of the Western Australian Government’s Machinery of Government changes.
It comprises the former Department of State Development, the Industry Development Division of the Department of Commerce, the former Office of Science from the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, the innovation division from the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and the International Education function from the former Department of Education Services.
The 2025 public sector reform saw the addition of the Energy Policy WA from the former Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. While Tourism WA and tourism investment development were moved to the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, the department's defence functions, including Defence West, Defence Industries and Veterans, were moved to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and the Coordinator General to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
The Department of Energy and Economic Diversification drives Western Australia’s energy transition and long-term economic growth for a stronger, more diverse WA economy.
It delivers initiatives on behalf of the WA Government that support the full spectrum of economic activity in WA, from strategic energy planning and large-scale industrial operations to innovative startups and small to medium businesses across the state.
