The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS) was formed on July 1, 2025, following the Western Australian Government's public sector reform initiative.
Before the 2025 reform, the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport was the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, which was formed on July 1, 2017, as part of the Western Australian Government’s Machinery of Government changes.
Initially an amalgamation of the former Department of Culture and the Arts, Department of Sport and Recreation, Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor, and the local government, office of multicultural interests functions of the Department of Local Government and Communities and the Department of Aboriginal Affairs' Aboriginal History Research Unit.
The 2025 public sector reform saw the addition of Tourism WA and tourism investment development from the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation. While Racing, Gaming and Liquor including support for Gaming and Wagering Commission and Local Government, was moved to the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety.
CITS works collaboratively with government, community organisations, peak bodies and other stakeholders to achieve our vision of Western Australia being celebrated as the best place to live, work and visit in Australia.
