Australia's carbon market has been through a tumultuous two months, but local players are positive about long-term growth.

Alterra has appointed Future Fund Board of Guardians and Crown Resorts director John Poynton as the founding Chair of its advisory board, which will provide access to networks, strategic feedback, views on opportunities and risks, and introductions to potential deals and sources of capital. The company is developing a pipeline of potential project opportunities with existing land and water owners in WA.

Alterra is laying the groundwork for the expansion of its agribusiness with the appointment of veteran agricultural executive Oliver Barnes as the incoming Managing Director to strengthen its executive team. Current Managing Director Andrew McBain will remain in his position until Mr Barnes takes up his new position in early April following a notification period, after which he will remain as an Executive Director.

The company is seeking shareholder approval at Thursday's extraordinary meeting for the demerger, which will place its carbon arm and a solid stream of income into the hands of individual Alterra shareholders.

The transfer of all forestry and carbon assets into Carbon Conscious Investments has been completed and the company is now seeking majority shareholder approval at the upcoming extraordinary general meeting to be held in Perth on 20 December 2018.

ASX listed Alterra is taking a page out of Wesfarmers' playbook with a proposal to demerge its carbon forestry business and focus on the development of its agribusiness projects. The move is expected to realise the full value of the carbon business and generate a potential windfall to shareholders who will now own 85% of the carbon business in their own right whilst retaining their Alterra shares.
