Woolworths Group is one step closer to building a two-storey supermarket and childcare centre in East Victoria Park, after a panel greenlit its $28 million application.
The supermarket chain’s construction arm Fabcot proposed to build a two-storey development with basement parking on a 7,633 square metre lot bound by Albany Highway and Shepperton Road.
At a meeting this morning, the Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel approved Fabcot’s application, which was valued at $27.5 million.
The application also comprises a Woolworths supermarket on the ground floor, nine retail tenancies, food and beverage tenancies, a childcare centre with an outdoor play area, alfresco spaces and associated parking.
DAP presiding member Karen Hyde said there was general community support for the proposal, as reflected in the public consultation period.
“It’s an appropriate use of a vacant and underutilised site in an urban corridor and district centre,” she said at the meeting.
“On balance, it would add vitality, activity, economic development, and certainly improved passage surveillance in this area.”
At the meeting, Town of Victoria Park councillor and DAP member Peter Melrosa said the locals were excited for the project.
“This provides the opportunity for people living in this precinct to walk to the facility and bring life to gateway,” he said.
“This not only looks good but also includes street front tenancies to continue the rhythm of Albany highway which is what it’s so known for.”
The development will span across nine lots, owned by Fabcot except for one under the state government’s control.
An agreement is in place between the state and Fabcot over certain conditions on the land the latter does not own, the DAP report shows.
The lot will be closed as a road and will be transferred from the state to Fabcot, on condition a portion of the land be transformed into vehicle access.
