Western Australia’s former agent general to the UK and Europe, John Langoulant, has joined economics and public policy advisory firm ACIL Allen in a Perth-based role.
Mr Langoulant will join ACIL Allen as a senior associate after a three-year term as agent general, which ended in September last year.
Mr Langoulant’s tenure at ACIL Allen will leverage decades of experience as one of the state’s most prolific and senior public business figures, including 10 years as the state’s under-treasurer to 2004, and chief executive roles at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA and Oakajee port and rail.
Mr Langoulant was also chair of the Government Employee’s Superannuation Board and has led several influential enquiries for the state government.
His appointment as agent general followed his role as special inquirer on Mark McGowan’s Inquiry into Government Projects and Programs.
Mr Langoulant, who has kept a low profile since leaving his London-based role in September last year, said he was looking forward to starting a new chapter at ACIL Allen.
“I appreciate greatly ACIL Allen’s offer to join their impressive team and look forward to working with them across public, private and not for profit sectors,” he said.
“My recent experiences in the role of agent general for Western Australia have also brought an international dimension to this advisory role which I look forward to developing.”
ACIL Allen chief executive Paul Hyslop said an appointment of Mr Langoulant’s status highlighted the business’s growth and development in WA in recent years, while executive director John Nicolaou said his appointment would further boost the firm’s reputation.
“John is one of Australia’s foremost experts in public policy, financial management, and the operations of government,” Mr Nicolaou said.
Mr Langoulant was made an officer in the general division of the Order of Australia in 2010 and was Western Australian Citizen of the Year for Business in 2011.
Angela Kelly was appointed agent general to the UK and Europe following Mr Langoulant’s departure in September on a nine-month caretaker contract.
Mr Langoulant's time in the job ended with a period of sustained media scrutiny over the terms of his employment, which included a $534,000 salary package, a $308,000 rental allowance and additional travel benefits.
