DEBT collection firm Charter Mercantile closed its Perth office last Friday after battling unsuccessfully for two years to build a viable business in Western Australia.
Charter’s State manager NSW Angela McDonald, described Perth as a start-up operation that failed to trade profitably.
“The decision was made because the Perth branch hadn’t been profitable for us,” Ms McDonald said.
The closure will lead to three job losses, since Charter managed most of its business centrally from a call centre in Brisbane.
Ms McDonald said the expiry of the lease on Charter’s West Perth premises was one trigger for the closure.
The other major change was that a financial services’ client in Perth had centralised its debt operations to Melbourne and wanted to use Charter’s Brisbane call centre.
