Business News journalist Ella Loneragan has been recognised by The Walkley Foundation, winning a national award at the esteemed organisation’s Mid-Year Media Prizes overnight.
Ms Loneragan received the Walkley Foundation’s student journalist of the year award in Sydney overnight, in recognition of her work as a student journalist writing for Curtin University’s The Western Independent publication in 2024.
The award was one of seven presented as part of The John B Fairfax Family Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards series, which recognises the efforts of journalists under the age of 28.
Ms Loneragan submitted two stories for consideration as part of her submission.
Award winners were selected through a peer-review process and winners decided based on journalistic excellence.
Perth-based SBS World News reporter Christopher Tan won the award for visual storytelling, while ABC Tasmania journalist April McLennan was named young Australian journalist of the year.
Walkley Foundation chief executive Shona Martyn congratulated the winners.
“Once again the judges remarked on the high quality of entries across the categories, an encouraging reminder that Australia’s best journalism is of the highest standard,” Ms Martyn said.
Ms Loneragan joined the Business News editorial team in May this year, as a journalist covering cultural industries.
She previously worked at The West Australian as a digital producer, while completing a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and international relations.
