Dr Penny Flett has had an extensive career in medicine, military service, research and advocacy - particularly in improving the lives of older Australians and people living with disabilities.

Settling in Australia in 1965, she became the first woman in peacetime to hold a male rank and the first woman doctor to serve in the RAAF in 1974.

In 1998 she was named Telstra Business Woman of the Year, and in 2003 was awarded the Centenary Medal, and in 2008 WA's Australian of the Year.

From 1995 to 2016, Dr Flett served as chief executive of Brightwater Care Group, one of the largest aged care providers in Western Australia.
