Joe Heffernan has been the executive director at the Conservation Council of WA since December 2022.

Prior to that, he was the chief executive of Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, lawyer and economic development advisor of the Kimberley Land Council and the Miriuwung Gajerrong (MG) Corporation, and spent 12 years with international environmental organisation Fauna & Flora International (FFI) where he led projects in the conservation of Asian and African elephants as well as establishing FFI’s presence in Australia.

Mr Heffernan was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of NSW in 2014 and had practiced charities law at Gilbert and Tobin.
