
James Bowen is a Policy Fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre. He was previously a non-resident research fellow at the Centre from 2018 to 2020.
Mr Bowen was a Visiting Research Fellow at Berlin’s Mercator Institute for China Studies in late 2019. From 2015 to 2017, he worked at the International Peace Institute in New York City, editing its flagship Global Observatory publication and contributing to programs on countering & preventing violent extremism. He has also consulted for international political risk firms active in Australia, was a speechwriter for the Commonwealth and Western Australian Governments, and a journalist.
Mr Bowen has published reports and essays for additional institutions including the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and Asia Society Policy Institute. He has contributed op-eds and interviews to media outlets including the South China Morning Post, ChinaFile, the National Interest, the Diplomat, the Lowy Interpreter, World Politics Review, World Policy Journal, New Europe, Radio National Australia and Agence France-Presse.
He has also participated in policy forums with the likes of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation, Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific, Global Center on Cooperative Security and Saferworld.
Mr Bowen has a Masters in International Relations from Griffith University and Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University.
