
Professor Ian Plimer is an Emeritus Professor at The University of Melbourne where he was Professor and Head of the School of Earth Sciences (1991-2005). He was Professor of Geology (University of Newcastle 1985-1991) and Professor of Mining Geology (University of Adelaide 2005-2012).
He has been awarded the Leopold von Buch Medal for Science, the Centenary Medal, the Eureka Prize (twice) and is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Prof Plimer has published more than 130 scientific papers and is author of multiple best-selling books for the general public. His main geological interests are in resources.
Prof Plimer was appointed to the Sun Resources board in September 2013 and became chair in November 2013. He also served on the boards of ASX-listed companies Silver City Minerals, Lakes Oil NL, Niuminco Group, Kefi Minerals, and unlisted entities (Hope Downs Iron Ore, Roy Hill Holdings, Queensland Coal Investments, TNT Mines).
