Hitoshi Okawa joined Inpex (formerly known as Indonesia Petroleum) in 1994, following 10 years with Japan China Oil Development Company in various domestic and international assignments. He has been involved in Inpex's Australian operations since 1998, following four years in the accounting & finance division of INPEX Tokyo head office. He then transferred to INPEX Browse, joining the inaugural Perth office team. Mr Okawa returned to the Tokyo office in 2002, taking on managerial roles in the planning & new ventures department and corporate strategy & administration division. In 2005, he returned again to Perth to oversee its commercial & corporate coordination division and became the director of corporate coordination in 2009. Mr Okawa was appointed president director of Australia in February 2019.
