Camera Electronic was founded in Perth in 1968 by Ronald "Ron" Frank, a trained fitter and turner who had developed a deep passion for photography while working as a street photographer and travelling salesman across Western Australia. Frustrated by the cost of servicing mechanical cameras, Ron taught himself the craft, began buying and repairing broken equipment at auction, and started selling from home. What grew from that quiet beginning was officially incorporated as Camera Electronic Service Company in 1971, trading from a North Perth storefront. Over the years Ron moved the business to its own premises at 305 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth - a sprawling showroom packed with stock and anchored by a custom-built workshop that became known affectionately by customers as Aladdin's Cave. Today, more than 55 years on, Camera Electronic is run by Ron's sons Saul Frank and Howard Frank, and has grown from a local repair shop into one of Australia's leading photographic, video, and imaging destinations - with Perth showrooms and a national online presence. In 2015, Saul and Howard founded PhotoLive Expo to bring the kind of world-class imaging events long held on the east coast directly to WA's creative community.
