John Gelavis is a highly experienced executive leader with over 35 years in the Western Australian building and construction industry, having held roles at national organisations including Bunnings, CSR, and Laminex Australia, and most notably serving as Executive Director of both the Housing Industry Association WA and Master Builders Association of WA. John is a past President of the Housing Industry Association WA, past Director of My Leave and Reddifund and currently a Director of mental health organisation MATES in Construction WA.
He holds a Masters Business Administration from the University of Western Australia and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Over his prolific career, John has championed industry excellence and recently steered the $30b WA Building and Construction Industry through the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the industry remained operational. John was the spokesperson for the industry in the media and consulted heavily by the State Government on critical decisions impacting the industry and secured numerous advocacy outcomes on behalf of the industry. He was member of the State Recovery Taskforce to provide high level and strategic advice to inform and support Western Australia’s recovery effort from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Johns Government and public advocacy success led to Business News, citing him as one of the most influential people in the state in the 2023 Power 500.
John is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Structerre Consulting Engineers, who are a national market leading engineering consultancy firm in the building industry providing Geotechnical, Structural and Civil Engineering, Energy Assessments, Building Surveying and Compliance Inspections.
John remains deeply committed to industry advancement, public education, and community wellbeing. His leadership, strategic foresight, and tireless dedication have been widely recognised and continue to shape the future of Western Australia’s built environment.
