Malcolm McCusker - Governor

Mr Malcolm McCusker, a barrister, was educated at Perth Modern School and the University of WA Law School.  Admitted to practice in 1961, he has appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court, Federal Court, High Court and Privy Council.  He has acted pro bono in a number of cases (including a successful appeal for Andrew Mallard, wrongly convicted of murder).  In 2007, the Australian Lawyers' Alliance awarded him the Civil Justice Award.   He is patron of the Innocence Project (WA).

He was Special Inspector investigating the Rothwells Bank collapse in 1989-90, and the inaugural Parliamentary Inspector of the Corruption and Crime Commission (2004-08).  He has been Chairman of the Legal Aid Commission of WA for 27 years, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the WA Constitutional Centre since its inception in 1997.

He supports, and is the Patron of, the McCusker Alzheimer's Research Foundation and, with great support from his wife Tonya, is involved in a range of humanitarian interests, whilst continuing to practise as a barrister.   Malcolm has been a trustee and supporter of SAS Resources Trust since 1996, and long time patron of the McCusker Foundation for Alzheimer's Research.

In 2005 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and WA Citizen of the Year (Professions).  In 2008 he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Western Australia and in 2009 an Honorary Doctorate of Edith Cowan University.  In 2010 he was named Unit Way "Philanthropist of the Year", and made WA Citizen of the Year, for Community Service and Philanthropy.

He is very happily married to Tonya, another UWA Law School graduate, and has 3 grown-up children, 2 young stepsons, and an infant daughter.  He is a strong supporter of Surf Lifesaving (a bronze medal holder since 1955) and has been, for many years, a member of North Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club, where he keeps fit by paddling a surf ski with a group of very competitive veterans.

Malcolm has also been closely involved for many years with agriculture, and has held farming properties at Calingiri for over 36 years, running sheep and cattle and cropping over 4,000 hectares annually.   He is patron of Landcare WA, and a board member of the Australian Sustainable Development Institute.

Malcolm is the Governor of the State of WA.
