Strike extends gas zone at deep Perth Basin well

Strike Energy has increased the net pay zone within the Kingia sandstone conventional gas discovery by 17 metres to 58 metres after completing wireline logging at its West Erregulla-2 well in the Perth Basin, WA.

The wireline data was used in conjunction with analysis of the logs and use of offset comparison data and cut-offs to enable the upgrade.

Down-hole tools indicated the Kingia reservoir as having pressures between 6,814 pounds per square inch absolute, or “psia”, and 6,828 psia.

These pressures suggest a gross column height of 220 metres, which is in line with the company’s modelling of the areal extent of the field.

Management said permeability was calculated at an exceptional 102 milldarcies, or “mD”, whilst compositional analysis of gas samples recovered at surface returned 92% methane and 5.8% carbon dioxide.

This could support a low-cost gas development and point the way for further discoveries at depth in the Perth Basin, according to the company.

Strike is now conditioning the hole for the running of production casing before preparations are made for flow testing at West Erregulla-2.

Managing Director Stuart Nicholls said: “The Kingia gas discovery exhibits characteristics of one of the highest quality gas finds onshore in Australia. With 58 metres of net pay, this makes West Erregulla-2 the thickest net column seen in any Kingia penetration within the basin to date, which is host to the historic Waitsia gas field.”

“The high reservoir pressures and excellent permeabilities are supportive of a significant recoverable gas resource with gas compositions in-line with the neighbouring Waitsia field.”

Strike has also intersected 10 metres of net gas pay with average porosity of 10.3% in the deeper High Cliff sandstone and 10.2m of net gas pay with porosities of up to 14% in the shallower Wagina sandstone target.

West Erregulla-2 is located within EP469, which is held equally by Strike and Warrego Energy.
