ASX-listed Legend Mining continues to fatten up its emerging, massive nickel-copper sulphide discovery at Mawson in Western Australia’s Fraser Range. Assay results tabled last week from diamond drilling in hole RKDD011 returned two intercepts in one hole showing a total of 36.6m of mineralisation with grades increasing significantly at depth. Assay results just in from another hole bring the total mineralisation in that hole to 107.9m.
The Perth-based mineral explorer said it had intercepted a 15m section grading 0.65 per cent nickel, 0.53 per cent copper and 0.04 per cent cobalt from 129m down hole with a second, lower interval in that same hole returning 21.6m at 1.93 per cent nickel, 1.09 per cent copper and 0.10 per cent cobalt from 217.5m.
Legend said the lower intersection included three higher-grade zones, including 1.9m at 2.97 per cent nickel, 1.10 per cent copper and 0.15 per cent cobalt from 217.5m, 4.2m at 2.68 per cent nickel, 1.36 per cent copper and 0.14 per cent cobalt from 222m and 6.3m at 2.62 per cent nickel, 1.62 per cent copper and 0.14 per cent cobalt from 233m.
Management said hole 11 was designed to test the extension of mineralisation seen in holes 7 and 8 and explore a downhole electromagnetic conductor identified in hole 10.
Whilst all the assay results are now in for all eight intervals seen in hole 8, the richest section came in at 5.6m grading 2.85 per cent nickel, 1.86 per cent copper and 0.15 per cent cobalt from 199.4m. However, the thickest section in the hole gave up a solid 44m long intersection going 0.47 per cent nickel, 0.25 per cent copper and 0.03 per cent cobalt from a relatively shallow 91m down hole.
Legend has also received some early assay results for its latest aircore drill program at Mawson that its technical team is very interested in. It is currently drilling aircore holes to the northeast of the location of the diamond holes, following a previously identified geochemical anomaly along a 600m extension.
Two aircore holes returned anomalous results with one showing 12m at 0.14 per cent nickel, 0.08 per cent copper and 0.02 per cent cobalt from 56m. A second 19m hit showed 0.37 per cent nickel, 0.15 per cent copper and 0.03 per cent cobalt from 60m to the end of the hole. The company expects these results to lead to follow up diamond drilling in the immediate area.
Legend’s Rockford project, where Mawson lies, is located about 280km east of Kalgoorlie and covers roughly 3,100 square kilometres, with much of the project under a JV agreement between Legend, who holds 70% and renowned “prospector” Mark Creasy, who holds the balance.
Rockford is also 120km northeast of IGO’s revered Nova-Bollinger discovery that originally sparked the rush of junior explorers to the area. AngloGold Ashanti and IGO’s Tropicana mine is 100km to the north.
Legend Managing Director, Mark Wilson said: “These results support Legend’s previous statements that Mawson is a large mineralised system. The 21.6m intercept from hole 11 is material in both width and grade.”
“The new aircore assay results received, point to a developing story northeast of the current diamond drilling programme with aircore hole RKAC744 a few hundred metres from the collar of diamond hole11. We have commissioned a closer spaced gravity survey in this area, which is now underway. “
The Rockford project has six prospects scattered across its Fraser Range tenements where Legend will be looking to keep making hits like Mawson as it continues to explore the area by systematically drilling up each prospect.
