Green light for $38m social, affordable housing development in Bassendean
An apartment development with 80 per cent allocated for affordable housing, estimated to cost $38 million, has been approved.
DevelopmentWA proposes to build a 73-apartment, nine-storey building on 1 Park Lane in Bassendean, through the federal government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).
The state government’s Statutory Planning Committee, which includes Western Australian Planning Commission members, approved the development at a recent meeting.
The development comprises 20 per cent social housing, being 15 apartments, and 80 per cent affordable accommodation through the remaining 58 apartments.
Once completed, the building will be sold to and managed by a community housing provider as a built-to-rent development.
The community housing provider is yet to be selected.
An office space for the provider will be built on the ground floor of the Bassendean apartment project, according to the development application.
The federal government announced HAFF, a multi-billion-dollar fund, in November 2023 in a bid to reach its target of 55,000 new social and affordable homes by mid-2029.
WAPC chair Emma Cole said the project site being close to Bassendean train station, only 100 metres, was ideal.
Ms Cole also acknowledged the significant community interest in the development, with the project receiving more than 700 responses during the public consultation stage.
ABN Group subsidiary PACT Construction is the assigned builder to the Bassendean project.
The first two rounds of the HAFF allocated $1.9 billion for WA projects, largely to DevelopmentWA.
PACT Construction, EMCO Building and Icon Construction were selected as builders for 14 WA projects under HAFF.
