The BFS is now in full swing and remains on schedule with mining quotes, testwork and long-lead procurement items all tracking to plan.
With gold prices soaring through US$4000 an ounce last week for the first time in history, $35m in the bank and rare earths on everyone’s lips again, Dateline is wasting no time as it looks to close the gap between a final financial study and production at Colosseum.
The company rapidly became a market darling this year after Donald Trump referred to the rare earths potential of Colosseum that is exquisitely located just to the north of America’s only producing rare earths mine, MP Material’s Mountain Pass.
Dateline says all quotes from major US mining contractors have come in now and notably, are within the expected range when the latest scoping study was done in June. To support the BFS, metallurgical testwork is under way in Denver and long-lead items such as the ball and SAG mills are already being sourced to lock in delivery timelines. The access road upgrade into the project area, a 10km stretch off the I-15, is now nearing completion, clearing the path for heavy haulage once construction begins.
Managing director Stephen Baghdadi said the feasibility team has seen no material deviations from the economic or technical assumptions used in June’s updated scoping study, which outlined 635,000 ounces of gold production over an initial 8.5-year life.
“The BFS investigations continue to confirm our assumptions and understanding of the Colosseum project. With the gold price over US$4,000 an ounce, we expect a positive impact on the economic results.” he said.
The metallurgical program, handled by Hazen Research in Denver, is designed to confirm and potentially improve the 92 per cent recovery achieved when the mine operated between 1987 and 1993. Representative core from both the North and South breccia pipes has been dispatched for analysis, with results due by year-end.
GR Engineering Services, appointed in August to lead the feasibility study, has finalised specifications for key plant components and is driving the early procurement process. The inclusion of a sonic drilling campaign to test the tailings facility, along with geotechnical and hydrology programs, keeps Colosseum aligned with US permitting expectations.
Behind the engineering progress sits a story that has reshaped Dateline’s market standing in an extraordinary way. The company entered 2025 at just 0.3 cents a share and peaked last week at 67.5 cents, representing a staggering 22,400 per cent rise in 10 months, making it the standout performer on the ASX this year with daylight in second place. Its $25 million institutional placement in September lifted cash to more than $35 million, giving it the firepower to advance both gold and rare-earths programs without returning to market.
Colosseum’s rare-earth potential has also grown more tangible. Two independent 3D magnetotelluric models have validated a deep resistive anomaly beneath fenite outcrops, a signature often linked to carbonatite-hosted rare-earth systems like the nearby Mountain Pass mine. Dateline plans to drill that target in coming months while continuing gold infill and BFS drilling around its existing 1.1-million-ounce resource.
The broader narrative is one of timing. With Washington doubling down on domestic critical-minerals supply chains, a US-based gold-rare-earths hybrid backed by federal recognition and local contractors is an attractive prospect. For a company that barely registered on market radars a year ago, Dateline was recently propelled into the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Index. And now, with a market cap close to $2 billion, it sits easily amongst the top 300 listings on the market and is eyeing off a new index inclusion.
If Dateline can deliver its final feasibility study early next year as planned and lock in development funding soon after, the California-focused venture could move from paperwork to production inside 12 months. For now, the company’s Colosseum effort remains exactly where punters want it — on schedule, on budget and in gears.
