After leading the arts organisation for 12 years, Co3 Contemporary Dance’s inaugral artistic director and co-chief executive, Raewyn Hill, will step down.
Co3 is the company in residence at the State Theatre Centre of WA, formed through the merging of Buzz Dance Theatre and STEPS Youth Dance Company in May 2014.
Ms Hill became artistic director in September 2014, before she joined Hilary McKenna as co-chief executive in 2023.
The announcement came after the dance company’s opening night of GLORIA – A Triple Bill on Tuesday, which was the first time a Co3 show was held in His Majesty’s Theatre.
Under Ms Hill’s leadership, the company has toured regionally, nationally and internationally, including to Japan where Co3 performed at the World Expo 2025.
“As Co3’s first artistic director, Raewyn has had a profound impact on the contemporary dance sector in Western Australia and helmed a company now recognised nationally and internationally,” Co3 chair Margrete Helgeby Chaney said.
“Co3 has delivered world-class performances and collaboration, establishing itself as Western Australia’s state contemporary dance company over the past 12 years.”
Ms Hill said her time at Co3 through its growth phase has been a privilege.
“I have been proud to guide Co3’s artistic journey by shaping bold new works, deepening our connection with audiences and communities, nurturing extraordinary artists, and positioning contemporary dance from Western Australia with confidence on the stage,” she said.
“Having realised these artistic milestones and set a plan with transformative new initiatives to be announced in the coming months, I am confident now is the right time.
“I remain deeply committed to the company’s success and to ensuring that the next artistic director is supported to lead Co3 into its next era with confidence and vision.”
Ms Hill will continue as artistic director and co-chief executive until the end of this year, helping to develop the program for 2027.
Co3 said her final world-premiere performance would be a highlight of next year's season.
